LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Police Wednesday arrested a man in connection with the fatal shooting of a security guard training instructor in a downtown Los Angeles classroom.

Shortly before 4 p.m., 22-year-old Law Thien Huynh, of Gardena, left his classroom at the Coast Career Institute on Hill Street, near Pico Boulevard and then returned and kicked the door open, according to police.

Huynh then began firing a handgun at instructor, Roberto Herrera, 44, according to Lieutenant Paul Vernon of the LAPD’s Central Division.

Herrera, who had worked in the security industry and had taught at the school as a side job for three years, died at the scene from multiple gunshot wounds, Vernon said.

Huynh was initially resistant to arrest — wanting to finish smoking a cigarette — but he was handcuffed a short time later, Vernon said. He will be booked on murder charges.

A motive for the shooting was not immediately known.

May Roberto Herrera rest in peace. Prayers & comfort to his family.

His killer is an obvious sociopath. Wanted to finish a cigarette after mowing a man down in cold blood? Terrifying.

    • Tim

I’d probably need a smoke too.

    • Ken V

It seems clear that you don´t smoke… As a 34 year long smoking Veteran, I can say I would have had a smoke or two at least also after that.

      • nek siwel

        Here’s definite proof smoking kills…..

  • Kevin

Thanks for mining for hits by having an ambiguous title. Really classy.

    • arthur anderson

      What were you smoking ?

  • Jane doe

I can’t believe he is my neighbor! I knew something was wrong with him. But I didn’t think he was that crazy. He definitely has some troubling issues going on in his life. And probably is insane, the way he’s been acting when I see him from a far distant. He seems like a very depressed guy…..

  • T man

Kevin is having a problem forming an understandable sentance.

There is a waco living every block in L.A., an they’r all preparing a lead based breakfast for their neighbors.

    • Kevin.

      Sentence
      Wacko
      Lead-based

Spellchecker helps you not sound like a dimwit, use it.
“Student Kills His Teacher in Los Angeles Classroom”
      instead of something like:
“Security Guard Instructor Murdered by Student in Gardena”

Really? I really have to explain this? If you don’t understand this, you probably went to some worthless vocational school/community college yourself.

  • johnny

    what’s ambiguous?..well?

  • HollywoodSaint

there is always time for one last drag of a smoke before your toast

  • mike

Thanks to the NRA wack jobs like this guy have unlimited access to handguns. The NRA should be tried alongside thie killer

    • Randy

You can’t put it all on the NRA, they have zero control over the formalities of purchasing a firearm, if the killer bought his legally, we don’t know. It’s the government’s fault for not having a very detailed application process, like a psychological evaluation, and things of that nature.

If he had that gun illegally, then it falls on the government again for not stopping him from gaining possession of it in the first place. The NRA doesn’t have any control over the laws, it’s the politicians with the greasy palms….

      • Tim

Who do you think greases those palms Randy?

The NRA funnels tons of money in to campaign contributions. They lobby government in order to pass laws de-regulating gun ownership.

You’re correct when you say that the NRA isn’t directly at fault, but it is because of people like those that join the NRA that we have such easy means of acquiring weapons.

    • Tim

      Agreed.

      • arthur anderson

Kindly remove your head from that dark smelly place before you condemn the NRA. Who belongs to the NRA ? American citizens who have the foresight to see and appreciate the value of the Second Amendment which was wisely provided to us by our forefathers who knew how any government can become overbearing to a citizerery that is unarmed.. No offense, but try and educate yourself about it. As for the slain person, he waqs killed by a person …not a gun………

    • Eddie

Obviously you are dumb as a rock.

    • jae

people who practice gun crimes don’t adhere to gun control laws. strict gun control laws discourage the law biding citizens from owning guns.

  • Tim

Well it sounds to me like Herrera’s training has failed him miserably. Security guard training instructor that was shot. . . . I think he needed a different profession. Too late for that though. :(

  • Jeff D.

Maybe he talk to that guy like he.s an ass and people are tired of that kind of abuse in the work place.

  • kay k.

it is not the guns that kill, it the people!!!!! if you take guns away, then
only the bad people with guns, and it will be alot worse
then it is now. do some resurch people!!!!

    • Tim

Oh good god. Guns are designed to kill. It is their sole purpose. Guns make killing too quick and too easy. Without guns, chances of murder go down.

      Do your *research*.

  • ES

But of course more background checks should fix the gun prob. How’s that working out for ya?

  • logelly

people like tim should have a psychological evaluation done every year. they always want to put blame on somebody else instead of the criminal that was caught red handed. The NRA as no control over gun buying proceedures its all the wounderful government. besides who knows if this guy bought this gun legally and if he did he may have been in the right state-of-mind at that time and had no intentions of killing anyone. Instead of gong to trial for this guy who killed this man lets find a tree and hang him. take care of it now so my taxes do NOT pay for this man to have free meals and a roof over his head in jail for the rest of his pathetic life.

Money spent buy the NRA goes to fighting for our second admendment not to create laws.

tim get your stores right do the research before you pipe in next time.

    • Tim

I guess you read the first part of my post, then your brain got tired from having to use it, then you decided to post something yourself.

You completely missed my point. The NRA LOBBIES our Government, state and federal, to pass lenient gun laws. That’s it. What else is there to say? Money talks, and then walks.

      Tip:

      1.) Read the post fully.
      2.) Take a small brain-break.
      3.) Re-read the post again.
      4.) Form an opinion.
      5.) Take another brain break.
6.) Get a drink of water.
7.) Go back to computer and re-read post again.
8.) Discuss your opinion with the voices in your head.
      9.) Post a response.
10.) Go take a nap, because I’m sure at this point you are tired from having to actually use what little bit of brain power you have.

      @logelly.

  • arthur anderson

To the anti-gun sect, have you not watched the news in recent times and watched as foreign governments have massacered their unarmed citizens ?
You had better start paying attention because that is what your president is trying to bring to this country by agreeing to some U.N. ban on handguns….Why also would a president want an “internet kill switch”..

  • Kathleen Haring

You are a COWARD Thien Law Huynh Robert was MY FRIEND AND COWORKER. I will be at yoyr trial to see you sentenced. What could this have possibly been about to justify murder

  • dan

guys we have to look in to our laws, and reform them particulary the basic once it may change for the betterment of our life.

  • socalmal

It’s our 2nd amendment, we have the right to protect ourselves from idiots that are not going to follow any laws since laws are for law-abiding citizens only. If you don’t want to own a weapon(gun), then don’t but you wont stop criminals from obtaining and killing with them. I’d rather be prepared to protect my family from those intent on hurting us; the opposite of criminal intent.

As for the security guard instructor, my condolences for your families loss. Hopefully there will be something good to happen as a result of the way they screen prospective students.

  • Dave

Thirty percent of gun victims are wounded or killed by their own weapons.

  • Tommy Doan

I know him cause he use to go to my church and bible study.
But something happened and now he’s a suspect in a murder.
If I every see him again, I’m gonna need protection.

  • Tommy Doan

I am sorry for the lost of Roberto Herrera and his family.
It was his action and I can’t do anything about it.

  • Tommy Doan

I don’t want to do anything about this so please do not track me down.
    Idk what happened.

  • fel

    R.I.P Robert!!!

  • unknownmystery

I know Law Thien Huynh and i can’t believe he’d do something as bad as commiting a homicide. i was stunned when hearing the news. its disturbing.

  • r3D_dRag0n

Only God could judge him, but before that there is the law, and before the law there was—himself……Irony of life….his name is LAW….I once knew him—spoke to him once and never again……reason?——i wont say—–i even knew his brother and sister too…….My condolences to the instructor that lost his life….. We are not safe anywhere……by the way, this has nothing to do with the NRA, so leave them out of it…..REMEMBER—-anyone can get a hold of a gun if that person know the wrong people or they have money…….IT’S EASY TO DO EVIL, BUT IT’S HARD TO DO GOOD…….

  • frank
