Free Home Improvements From SoCal Gas

LOS ANGELES (CBS) ̶ If you're unemployed, or don't have a huge salary, the Southern California Gas Company may be able to help you make energy-saving home improvements for free.

The company's Energy Saving Assistance Program, formally known as the Direct Assistance Program, will repair or replace -- without charge -- natural gas furnaces for homeowners who qualify. Weatherization services, such as caulking, weather-stripping doors and the installation of low-flow shower heads, attic insulation and a high-efficiency clothes washer are also offered. Bonded and licensed contractors who are screened by Southern California Gas perform the necessary weatherization work.

Customers may be eligible to participate if they receive benefits from the Women, Infants and Children, Healthy Families, Medi-Cal, Food Stamps, Supplemental Security Income,Temporary Assistance for Needy Families or Low Income Home Energy Assistance programs. The program is open to eligible customers who rent and own, although renters will need the approval of the property owner to participate.

Customers may also qualify for a 20 percent discount on their natural gas bill through the California Alternate Rates for Energy program.
