Group: DUI Checkpoints Unfairly Targeting Immigrants

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Immigration activists say police sobriety checkpoints in the Southland unfairly target illegal immigrants.

KNX 1070's Ed Mertz reports the financial incentive behind the crackdown may be the biggest factor behind the increased presence of checkpoints.

Ron Gochez with the Southern California Immigration Coalition says certain groups have traditionally been targeted by law enforcement.

Gochez argues that Los Angeles and other cities stand to profit from the efforts because vehicles are impounded for 30 days when taken from an unlicensed driver, often costing up to $1,000 to get the vehicle back.

City and county officials need to follow other entities and adopt a policy for unlicensed drivers stopped at the check points, Gochez adds.
