Homeless Man Fatally Shot By Police

LOS ANGELES (CBS) – A homeless man fatally shot by Los Angeles police Saturday died from multiple gunshot wounds today.

An officer responding to a prowler call was sent to the 1200 block of North Westmoreland Avenue, not far from Sunset Junction, near Hollywood and Sunset boulevards, between Virgil and Hillhurst avenues at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.

Approximately 20 minutes later, the officer was chasing the suspect on Fountain Avenue, near Westmoreland Avenue. According to Sgt. Frank Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section, at one point during the foot chase the suspect produced a handgun and was shot by police. Shortly afterward reports of a police shooting and “officer needs help” were broadcast.

A handgun was recovered at the scene and the officer suffered an injury to the face.

Lt. Joe Bale of the county coroner’s office said that an autopsy was completed today and the cause of death was “multiple gunshot wounds.”

The man’s identity has been withheld pending notification of his family.

  • What a News?

wrong use of weapon. suppose to use pepper spray or stun gun
    so wrong.
    shame it is.

    • Nellie

Sure, you can use the pepper spray while the homeless man that was prowling on God knows who, produces a handgun. He wasn’t gonna use it, he just had it for show and tell kids!

how stereotypical drozone69 – just because a person is homeless does not mean they are incapable of of running or their sleep because they are drunk. You should take time and learn something about people who are homeless keeping in mind that they weren’t always in that situation. Suggestion, take a trip to downtown skid row and pick one or even two, we talk too and we weren’t born into homelessness we could have been forced into it .

a prowler with a weapon is a potential murder, and the officer’s shooting was justified.

  • Robear

police officers always have a supply of “clean” guns to plant as “evidence” when they shoot & kill someone when they didn’t have to.

Deceiving headline as it will lead too many bleeding-heart idiots to post what bad people the police are.

Nimrods, I’ve said it many times before, you don’t want police chasing and shooting at you, DON’T BREAK THE LAW1

How do some of you even get through a day?

  • mia

i dont think its fair for anyone regardless of who they are wether they are civilians or with uniforms with power…..its totally uncalled for to have someone get beaten up especially if they have no fights….
a person who is not armed and is by himself takes more than one cop to beat him out which they shouldve never done that in the first place….YOU WOULD THINK we should be protected because they are cops but then now a days who knows who we should trust and not trust…
my condolescenes to the family of that person. i am so sorry for their lost.

  • mia

oh darn that was for the incident that happened recently…i apologize…. sorry for the wrong comment to the wrong person…….
