5-year-old Shot Near Riverside County Fair
LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A 5-year-old child was struck by a stray bullet today in a vehicle-to-vehicle shooting in Indio.
The child was hit in the upper abdomen by a bullet as people in two vehicles shot at each other in the 46500 block of Monte Verde Street just before 6 p.m. According to Ben Guitron of the Indio Police, the shooting took place less than two blocks from the ongoing Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival which is expected to draw close to 300,000 people.
Witnesses saw occupants of a blue truck and a dark Chevrolet Blazer with tinted windows exchanging gunfire, Guitron said. The child, whose gender was unknown, was driven by a family member to John F. Kennedy and is unknown condition.
Police set up a perimeter on Monte Verde Street, near where the child lived, but the suspects remained at large, he said.
