Powerful Winter Storm Prompts Flash Flood Watch

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A powerful winter storm packing heavy rain and thunderstorms is expected to hit Los Angeles Friday, forecasters said.

The heaviest rain will hit Los Angeles County late Friday afternoon and continue through midnight, according to the National Weather Service. The greatest threat of thunderstorms will be during the afternoon and evening hours on Saturday, the agency advised.

The storm is expected to drop between one and three inches of rain in coastal and valley areas, and three to six inches in the foothills and mountains.

CBS2 Chief Meteorologist Josh Rubenstein says there could be up to two feet of snow in areas above 5,000 feet.

A flash flood watch for recent burn areas is scheduled to be in effect through late Saturday night.
