LONG BEACH (AP) — John “Steve” Horn, a Republican congressman who represented Long Beach for five terms, has died. He was 79.
California State University, Long Beach, spokeswoman Toni Beron says Horn died Thursday of complications from Alzheimer’s disease at his home in Long Beach.
Horn first ran for Congress in 1988, but was beaten in the primary. When redistricting forced incumbent Democrat Glenn Anderson to retire, Horn won an eight-way primary.
He went on to win the 38th District, which had previously voted Democratic, in 1992.
His district was eliminated by reapportionment in 2001 and Horn announced his retirement.
Horn was president of Cal State Long Beach from 1970 to 1988.
