624-Foot Freighter Runs Aground Near Long Beach

LONG BEACH (AP) — The U.S. Coast Guard says a freighter has run aground on a manmade island in the waters off Long Beach.

The Coast Guard said in a written statement that the 624-foot Ocean Sunrise ran aground on Island Freeman at about 6:30 p.m. Friday.

An above-water hull inspection with a searchlight showed no signs of damage to the boat, and there have been no reports of any injuries.

The statement says inspectors are now making sure the ship's storage and fuel tanks are intact, and pollution investigators are further assessing the freighter's condition.

Island Freeman is the largest of four built in San Pedro Bay in the 1960s to tap into an oil field.
