LAUSD Contemplates Layoffs Of 7,300 To Close Budget Gap

LOS ANGELES (AP) —  The Los Angeles Unified School District could lay off as many as 7,300 employees in the upcoming school year to close a $408 million budget hole.

The school board voted Tuesday to send warning notices to some 5,100 teachers and some 2,200 administrators including nurses and counselors, that their jobs could be lost effective June 30 if the district does not find other funding for the 2011-12 school year.

The exact number of layoffs will not be known until the results of the June vote on several state budget measures.

The nation's second-largest school district has slashed some $1.5 billion and laid off almost 5,000 employees over the past two years due to state funding cuts.

The sprawling district employs some 38,000 teachers and 28,000 other employees.
