Former House Candidate Sentenced To Year In Prison
SANTA ANA (AP) — A former Southern California congressional candidate has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison for obstruction of justice in a probe of a mailer sent to Latino voters during his 2006 campaign warning that immigrants could not vote.
Prosecutor Greg Staples says former Orange County Republican candidate Tan Nguyen will also serve six months in a residential re-entry program and three years of supervised release.
Nguyen declined comment on Monday's hearing before U.S. District Court Judge David O. Carter except to say it didn't go well.
His prison term begins March 28.
Nguyen was convicted in December of one count of obstruction of justice for lying to state investigators about his knowledge of the letter sent to 14,000 registered Democrats with Latino surnames during his bid to unseat Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez.
