'Miracle Project' Tries To Unlock The Mysteries Surrounding Autism

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — To say cases of autism are on the rise would be an understatement.

Thirty years ago, one in 10,000 children were diagnosed with autism. That number now is more like one in 110.

While many ask what can cure autism, one group called "The Miracle Project" suggests all we need to do is look within ourselves for the answers.

Pat Harvey took a closer look at this exceptional group helping exceptional people.

Every Wednesday evening, the group gathers kids who get to express their feelings through art, song and acting.

Behind the "Miracle," is music and theater coach Elaine Hall, or Coach E as the kids call her. Hall created the group when her own adopted son, Neal, was diagnosed with autism.

"Miracle Project" has its roots in Southern California, but the initiative is going global. A new chapter has just started in India, one had already begun in Ethiopia.
