Convicted Killer Gets 88 Years Added To Life Sentence For Strangling 2 Cellmates

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — An inmate already serving a no-parole life prison term was sentenced Tuesday to an additional 88 years to life for strangling two cellmates.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Stephen A. Marcus said it did not appear that Kurt Karcher has shown any remorse for the March 7, 2006, death of Scott Manning at the California State Prison in Lancaster, and the May 24, 2007, attack on Edgar Jimenez at the Twin Towers Correctional Facility in Los Angeles.

"... The fact remains that you are essentially a killing machine. You are killing people," Marcus told the 42-year-old defendant.

Marcus said he believed every effort should be made by prison officials not to house anyone with Karcher.

According to court records, Karcher killed Manning during a fight over hygiene issues between the two. Karchar was then awaiting trial for Manning's slaying when he killed Jimenez.

Records show that about five hours after Karcher was assigned to share a Twin Towers jail cell with Jimenez, they had a dispute over jailhouse "rules" that inmates develop among themselves.
