Gardena Teen Fatally Shot During Apparent Burglary

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A 19-year-old Gardena man was fatally shot by an auto shop owner in South Los Angeles during an apparent burglary.

Joven Broson was with two others when he was shot outside the shop in the 5800 block of South Hoover Street near Slauson Avenue at about 12:30 a.m. Sunday, according to police and a coroner's spokesman.

"Two men were removing auto parts from vehicles parked at the business," Los Angeles police Officer Karen Rayner said. "A witness called to alert the owners of the business who then responded to the business to investigate."

Rayner says one of the owners armed himself with a handgun and confronted the suspect, who was trying to escape over a fence. One shot was fired, striking the suspect in the lower torso.

The owner, whos name was not made public, called paramedics and Broson was taken to a hospital where he died.

Police say Broson went to the shop with 19-year-old Charles Netherly and 19-year-old Christina Sharp, who was found hiding nearby. Both were arrested on suspicion of burglary and are being held on $20,000 bail.

The shop owner was interviewed and released, Rayner said.
