LOS ANGELES (CBS) — It’s hundreds of pages long, but if you want to know where your tax dollars are going in the city of Los Angeles, a full list of who makes what is now available to the public.

Salary information for nearly 37,000 Los Angeles city employees was posted online on Thursday in a move City Controller Wendy Greuel said was designed to make local government more transparent.

The salaries listed in the database reflect reduced pay due to furloughs and other cutbacks, as well as increased pay due to overtime, bonuses, uniform and car allowances and other benefits, according to Greuel.

“Angelenos have a right to know how their taxpayer dollars are being spent, which is why I thought it was important for Los Angeles to set an example and post the salary of every city employee online,” Greuel said.

According to the controller’s office, Los Angeles is the largest city in the country to post a comprehensive list of employee salaries.
Calls for such disclosure increased after news broke about exorbitant salaries being paid to most Bell City Council members and some top city administrators.

The full database is available on the City Controller’s website.

Bring on the complainers…….City employees should not make that much money….Right,? is that what everyone is going to hear now??? Seems to me, all of you complainers should work for city if your that jealous. If you want good employees, you need to pay a competetive salary.

Many city employees are rude and poorly educated. Why would you pay a competitive salary for low quality employees with bad attitudes who lack social skills? How quickly they forget who they work for (Post Office, DMV, I’m talkin’ to you). Most city employees who deal with the public wouldn’t last a week at a private company.

      1. Mike says:

Just so you know, The Post Office is Federal, and the DMV is State. They having nothing to do with city funds. Many city employess are rude, but many more are not.

Mike it seems to me you don’t see the whole picture here,a competetive salary is different than ripping off the people, some of this city top salarys are about $275,000 when others making a lot less had to take a cut backs, and we have more than 10%unemployment, the schools are closing a lot of special programs, and this shameless people are making outrageous salarys wile others are suffering the consecuences of the city missmanaging our tax payers money by same people.

      1. Mike says:

I do see the who picture, I bet you would see it a completely different way if you were the one making the $275,000. It has nothing to do with ripping the taxpayer off. If you read the report, alot of the money was made in overtime. There are spots in the fire and police depts that need to be filled. The city does not have enough employees, so those spots are filled with overtime. People can not have it both ways. They want prompt service, but they are not willing to pay for it.

Just get rid of the city public works employees who drink and go to strip clubs on city time

I know someone who is a lowly locker attendant at an L.A. city pool. He makes almost $12.00 an hour. It is no wonder the City has no money. Shouldn’t that job be minimum wage?

I don’t want to deny someone a good wage, but the job does not require that much. We’re talking about collecting patron’s bags and doing some cleaning. Most of the time they sit because they don’t have much to do.

I haven’t even mentioned the money that is already being socked away for retirement for these young workers.

Higher paid city official should got higher pay cut than regular or lower level employee.
Because of higher salary for high level officials cause a lot of strain in the budget

You must work for the DWP.

  6. Carlos says:

They should all be fired and get some real people to do work just like any coporation does when people don’t do their work.
Maybe then the new officials will do a better job

Only goes to show that the city of Los Angeles is far from being broke It’s when they can’t afford to make good on six figure payroll checks that we will know for sure that the city is broke but far from it this is not a revenue issue here it’s a spending issue PERIOD!!!

  8. jason says:

the stated pay is only a small part of the problem…the real issue is the hidden compensation in the form of pension and related benefits that are much higher than private sector employees. society will be dealing with that for years until ultimately citizens refuse to pay government employee pensions…

    1. Mike says:

Do you even know what you’re talking about? In case you don’t know, alot of government employees don’t pay inot social secuirty. Therefore, they do not collect social security, so they need a little extra to compensate for that. People are always complaining about government pensions. They hired on to do a job that alot of people are unwilling to do, so they should be paid accordingly. If you’re that jealous, maybe you should be a government employee. Of not, stop complaining and pay these employees what they are due.
