LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa assembled a blue ribbon panel to review security at Los Angeles International Airport last year after an KNX 1070 investigation revealed multiple safety and security lapses at the nation’s second-busiest airport.
As KNX 1070 investigative reporter Charles Feldman reports, progress is slow in coming — and possibly politically motivated.
Feldman says federal security laws have prevented panel members from talking to the media, but a fair number of the 26-member panel report that the group’s work kicked into high gear this week.
Although no conclusions have yet been reached, some panel members indicate the final report may call for a reorganization at the airport, where police were found sleeping on the job along with fire safety hazards along exits throughout the terminal buildings.
