Residents Complain Of 'Mildly Irritating' Odor Across East LA

BOYLE HEIGHTS (CBS) — Authorities on Tuesday were working to determine the cause of a "widespread and mildly irritating" odor in the East Los Angeles area, a city fire spokesman said.

Brian Humphrey of the Los Angeles Fire Department said his department had been getting 911 calls, mostly from people in the Boyle Heights area, while county firefighters were receiving the same reports in the larger area of East Los Angeles.

He said there was no need to call 911.

Both fire departments, along with The Gas Co., were investigating the source of the mystery smell, according to Humphrey, who said he expected that the source of the problem would be found outside the city limits.

There were no evacuations or reported injuries.
