Lawsuit Filed In Calif. Over Taco Bell Beef

IRVINE (CBS/AP) — An Alabama law firm claims in a lawsuit that Taco Bell is using false advertising when it refers to using “seasoned ground beef” or “seasoned beef” in its products.

The meat mixture sold by Taco Bell restaurants contains binders and extenders and does not meet the minimum requirements set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture to be labeled as “beef,” according to the legal complaint.

The class-action lawsuit was filed Friday in federal court in the Central District of California by the Montgomery law firm Beasley, Allen, Crow, Methvin, Portis & Miles.

Attorney Dee Miles said attorneys had Taco Bell’s “meat mixture” tested and found it contained less that 35 percent beef.

The lawsuit on behalf of Taco Bell customer and California resident Amanda Obney does not seek monetary damages, but asks the court to order Taco Bell to be honest in its advertising.

“We are asking that they stop saying that they are selling beef,” Miles said.

Irvine-based Taco Bell spokesman Rob Poetsch said the company denies that its advertising is misleading.

“Taco Bell prides itself on serving high quality Mexican inspired food with great value. We’re happy that the millions of customers we serve every week agree,” Poetsch said. He said the company would “vigorously defend the suit.”

The lawsuit said that Taco Bell’s “seasoned beef” contains other ingredients, including water, wheat oats, soy lecithin, maltodrextrin, anti-dusting agent and modified corn starch.

try going vergetarian and you won’t have to worry about where’s the beef. It’s healthier for you anyway and animals aren’t killed to feed you.

    1. El Jefe says:

According to the lawsuit the “beef” taco is actually closer to being vegetarian. You should be excited to have a new food choice.

  8. John Torres says:

People should not be wasting time in our courts whining about fast-food not having 100% “kosher” beef. If you want good beef, do not go to fast food. The crime is not by Taco Bell as they are acting as fast-food should (a quick junk food fix)The crime is when some bored person sucks their society in one big waste of legal time and money

  9. wheres the beef says:

nothing like stretching the beef cost . i wander what one is actually getting in all these food trucks etc .

  10. moe says:

they add some kind of sand to help the meat mixture not coagulate or clump together. its not harmful, just know that you are eating a small amount of sand in your taco bell taco.

  12. Amy Rogers says:

People always talk bad about those moving taco trucks that park in different areas but I’m 110% sure that their tacos have a lot more real beef and less chemicals then Taco Bell’s for the same price or less. Point being, next time you see one of the trucks and your hungry…try them out. They are not a greedy corporation and actually care about their customers. I now get my tacos and burritos from these moving trucks and I’m a white women who is also a RN. These trucks are just as sanitary if not better then the 18 year olds serve you at most fast food restaurants =)
