Carona turned himself in to the Englewood prison in Littleton, Colo., about 8:30 a.m., according to Chris Burke of the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

Carona has remained free on bond pending an appeal that was rejected by a federal appeals court earlier this month.

Carona had been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy, mail fraud and witness tampering in a sweeping public corruption case, but was acquitted of all but one charge.

He was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison.
