LOS ANGELES (CBS) — You’ve heard it before but it bears repeating. With the economy still sluggish, the time to make deals on home improvement projects is now.

Contractors are literally giving dry wall away…and now is the time to make a deal.

But, as experts will also warn you…don’t fall for a price that sounds too good to be true. And don’t just trust anyone who shows up to do the work.

Angie Hicks, the founder of the contractor/service professional review site angieslist.com, was an in-studio guest on the KCAL 9 News at Noon Monday to talk about home improvements for 2011 and how to find the right person to do the job.

She offered practical advice (get references!) as well as pitfalls to watch out for (never sign a contract with blank spaces!)

I am a 25 year veteran of the construction business. Please do not take this woman or her advice too seriously. Construction costs are up, not down, due to rise in transportation costs. We are paying more for materials than ever and labor costs are up because of tax and burden rates. This is a very irresponsible advertisement for Angie’s List.

@M.Duffy-i can agree with you, every thing is going UP. the thing here is how a person can revamp his/her home without spending too much in which the lady didn’t answer since she promoted their services instead of giving a useful advice.
