Elton John Feels Like ‘Second-Class Citizen’

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Sir Elton John is “fed up” with being a treated like a “second-class citizen” in the U.S.

That’s why the 63-year-old gay singer said he took a stand last week during a performance at a private Beverly Hills fundraiser for the ongoing legal challenge to California’s gay marriage ban. The outspoken British piano man, who became a parent to a baby boy on Christmas Day with partner David Furnish, added that “as I get older, I get more angry about it.”

“In this country, we need more dialogue,” he said during an interview Friday. “We don’t need any more stone throwing. We don’t need any more vitriol. We need people to say, ‘OK. I’m straight. You’re gay. Let’s get along. I’m Republican. You’re Democratic. Let’s work together.’ I’m sick and tired of people being hateful to each other in this country.”

John disappointed some gay rights activists after California’s Proposition 8 banning gay marriage passed in 2008 when he said he had no desire to get married and was satisfied with his civil partnership in England. He sang a different tune Wednesday when he praised the effort to overturn Proposition 8 and promised to do everything he could to support it, even though he is British.

The couple’s son, Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John, was born in California through a surrogate mother. John said he was disappointed that members of the Church of England questioned his parenthood in the days following his son’s birth. He insisted that he’s not against religion and that “Jesus was a wonderful, compassionate man, who forgave on the cross.”

“Everyone is entitled to have their own beliefs and their own spirituality,” said John. “The big difference is that the dogma of the church can be so hateful and divisive. It’s stuck in the stone age. We don’t live in the stone age anymore. The church is losing people left, right and center because people are fed up with the rhetoric that they’re giving them.”

we do live in a hateful society. i wish we could all find peace so that we can in turn be peaceful with each other. its not hard, just love yourself, the rest is easy.

It is not about hate, it is about moral beliefs and standing up against everything else that is trying to tear them apart. I do love how foreigners are always trying to change our country. If you want to have an influence, become a citizen, then try to change it. Everyone one thinks we should be like the rest of the world. we left the rest of the world to come here and be different, not the same.

  • Prince Tony

He is a second class because he was not born here and will always be treated that way. Quit whining Elton, you had the 70`s and 80`s take the money and run.
However, the 60`s are back….go DUFFY!!! GO The Black Keys!!!!

    • callemlikeiseeem

you sound more like a PRINCESS~ why don’t you run and hide you LOSER

  • Otis J.

Hey ya Elton, do us all a big favor and just go back home. You’ve more than worn out your gay rights agenda around these parts of the world.
Hint for you: Nobody really cares anymore about what Elton John thinks, says or does. We’ve all heard it more than one too many times.

    • Dave

This is his home moron. He pays more taxes than you ever will so shut the hell up.

Bigotry knows no borders. Hate comes in all nationalities and religions. Saying one should go back to their own country is just publically admitting your own ignorance and shame of it.
    And you should be ashamed.
Morals? If your morals are such that they teach you to despise another humans love, that harms no one, in fact has been shown in study after study to be perfectly healthy and nurturing, then your morals are based on false assumptions.
Sir ELton speaks of the losses in the christian church. He is correct. This is not due to a fault in the teachings if Jesus, but in the ignorance and fear of the church.
People, we do not need to find a rallying cry of hate and false senses of moral superiority. We should instead find the value in each other, look for what is good in each other. Do not be so preoccupied in finding fault, for we each surely have our own.
Do not let fear, or even misguided love lead you to believe in something can not back up with reality.
The reality is that homesexuality is neither harmful, not abnormal. This is proven over and over again in research, studies, court, and life. It exists in some form in all of nature. It is simply an attraction to one gender more then another, no more. Human sexuality runs the gamut. It is no more black and white then anything else in nature.
Ask yourself this..how does it harm? Do not assume what you have been led to believe by others. Look to real answers. Chances are you know several gay people and couldnt tell them from any one else.

I totally and completely agree. Thank you for stepping up and articulating in a nice way how all people should be treated with respect. Though I am straight and married for 30 years, I have several gay friends who have been in a loving relationships for just as many years. I applaud you.

Citizen? Did I miss that one. I thought he was English? Like in Sir Elton. Ya! He’s note even a third class citizen.

      hahahahahahahahahaha. Wow, you’re so funny.

Elton John is quoted: “In this country, we need more dialogue.” I think we get more than enough dialogue from blog comments like the ones above…which don’t seem to influence pre-existing opinions. I just like the fact we live in a country where both bigots and complainers can co-exist by bad-mouthing one another online with little need for physical violence.
