Ex-OC Sheriff Carona To Surrender To Feds
SANTA ANA (CBS/AP) — The former top cop in Orange County said on Friday he will surrender to federal prison before a court date next week.
Former Orange County sheriff Michael Carona plans to surrender to a federal prison in Colorado on a witness-tampering conviction before he is due in court Tuesday.
Carona's attorney Brian Sun says in a letter filed in court Friday by prosecutors that the former three-term lawman intends to surrender at the Federal Correctional Institution Englewood in Littleton, Colo., before a scheduled hearing Jan. 25 in Santa Ana.
A federal appeals court this month upheld Carona's 2009 conviction on witness tampering.
Carona had been indicted on federal charges of conspiracy, mail fraud and witness tampering in a sweeping public corruption case, but was acquitted of all but one charge.
He was sentenced to 5 1/2 years in prison.
