LOS ANGELES (CBS) —Days after the Hollywood Foreign Press apologized for Ricky Gervais’ jokes at the Golden Globes, saying the British comedian went too far during his hosting duties, Gervais is insisting he did nothing wrong.

The popular comedian was blasted by some for his wisecracks at members of the Hollywood community on Sunday’s broadcast. But Gervais says he was just doing his job.

He says on Piers Morgan’s talk show airing Thursday: “If they didn’t want me, they shouldn’t have hired me.”

Gervais says he believes the targets of his zingers have a sense of humor.

“It’s going to be a night of partying and heavy drinking, or as Charlie Sheen calls it: breakfast,” Gervais told the audience at the beginning of the show.

Gervais also quipped that he was sure the award for special effects would go to the team who airbrushed the movie poster for “Sex and the City 2”.

“He definitely crossed the line. And some of the things were totally unacceptable,” Philip Berk, president of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, told the Hollywood Reporter.

Berk wouldn’t comment on whether Gervais will be back next year, but Gervais says he probably won’t return.

I thought that he was hilarious. I didn’t watch the original broadcast. But I watched the rerun just to see him. He certainly livened up the show.

While I thought it was a bit of overkill with the jabs (as there was at least one in every introduction by Gervais), I must say that some of them were real keepers and had me laughing pretty hard.

  5. Stephanie Tso says:

When you hire an insult comic, don’t you expect people to get insulted? Isn’t that the fun of it? I’m just glad it wasn’t Jack black or some other god awful poop joke comedian. Philip Burke needs to lighten up, these people make MILLIONS of dollars per episode, the can take a little wise crack about their known habits and asthetics every once in a while.

  6. Alex M says:

If any of Ricky’s comments where untrue then the Hollywood foreign press would have nothing to worry about. However it just goes to show you how wonderful committed most entertainers are at criticizing or satirizing real life, but when that “reality” is re-directed upon the thinning veiled entertainers they demand apologies. I believe the expression is “If you can’t take the heat…” you all know the rest.

I have to add. If these artists are willing to subject their selves to participating in films and T.V. that has no artistic or moral merit then I am glad to watch them experience the pain of what I have to sit through in the theater.
