SANTA MONICA (AP) — Investigators say a Santa Monica High School student athlete suddenly left baseball practice and jumped to his death from a nearby hotel’s 10th floor.

Sgt. Jay Trisler says 14-year-old freshman Matthew Mezza was practicing with teammates Friday afternoon when he abruptly crossed the street to the Sheraton-Delfina Hotel and jumped with his team looking on.

Trisler says there’s no other information on the apparent suicide.

Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels of Beth Shir Shalom, the synagogue Matthew had attended, told the Los Angeles Times that everyone is shocked, saying there was no indication the teenager was troubled.

I think it would be more accurate to say nobody recognized any indicators that the teenager was troubled.

The signs were probably there; however, disguised or hidden.

How about reducing the vast amount of stressors on our kids that we continue to feel into adulthood like: test scores, grades, athletic competition, fast food, unrealistic body images, peer pressure, bullying, no teen jobs, juvenile criminalization by society and legal groups…
