3 Dead, 3 Injured In 10-Vehicle Crash In Newport Beach

NEWPORT BEACH (CBS) — At least three people are dead and three hurt, one critically, in a ten-car pileup in Newport Beach Saturday afternoon.

The crash occured just after 3 p.m. at Pacific Coast Highway and Riverside Avenues.

Officials at the scene tell CBS 2's Melissa Maynarich it will be "at least" morning before traffic is allowed to go through the area as the investigation into the cause of the crash will continue late into the evening.

The names and ages of the dead and extent of the non-critical injuries were not immedicately available.

Newport Beach Police Lieutenant Bill Hartford on-scene told Maynarich, "This is very much a tragedy."

He said the non-critical injured were expected to be released from the hospital after treatment.

The Associated Press reported two cars overturned and some of the victims were trapped inside their vehicles.
