LA Rabbi: Palin Should Retract ‘Blood Libel’ Remark

Video slams journalists, pundits

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A local rabbi bristled on Wednesday at former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin’s use of the term “blood libel” — though he declined to speculate on whether she knew the real meaning of the term.

Rabbi Marvin Hier with the Simon Wiesenthal Center tells KNX 1070 the public is largely unaware of the history behind the term “blood libel”.

Palin, in a Facebook posting discussing the attack in Arizona in which six people died and Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, D-Ariz., was seriously injured, said “journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.”

Hier called Palin’s comments “over the top,” since blood libel refers to the idea that Jews use the blood of murdered Christian children for religious rituals, such as the baking of matzos.

“I have know idea if she knew” what she was saying, he said, but “every Jew and many Christians recognize it immediately.”

Hier said he would also criticize someone for calling the Arizona shooting an inflammatory term such as “Auschwitz,” he said. “It’s bad. But it’s not Auschwitz.”

Instead of blaming Palin, I instead suggest that the rabbi try and figure out how to prevent insane people from getting guns. Palin is not responsible for this crime and she has every right to say what she wants.

    • Sandra

The Rabbi does not seem to be blaming Palin for anything. He appears to be saying that she needs to know the meaning of the terms she uses.

      • Karen

It is NONE of his business nor his place to comment about what Palin says. And since he is a RABBI, why should I believe he knows more about the definitions of words than Palin OR THE DICTIONARY for that matter? He needs to shut up because he is continuing this nonsensical debate.

    • No fan of Palin

Palin has a history of ignorance that she has clearly demonstrated time and time again. Obviously she is uneducated and confuses street smarts with intelligence. So what that she can kill a moose or bison…She clearly makes other’s opinions her own and obviously cannot and should not lead this country!

      • Roger B

It’s obvious Palin didn’t or doesn’t write her speeches

      • Karen

That is YOUR opinion, NOT mine. I think she is VERY INTELLIGENT.

    • bdj

It’s not the Rabbi’s place to prevent this type of crime. That is why we have gun laws. And if the people that sell guns do not follow the law, we have this problem. There are, of course other reasons that people illegally obtain guns, but in any case, it’s still not the Rabbi’s place to stop it.

THAT is why this country is so great Karen..! We are all entitled to our OWN opinion. Unfortunately Palin uses hers to incite and belittle. Her 8 minute rant is just a poor attempt to spin this in her favor and blame others. There is nothing original, sensitive or intelligent that comes from her mouth… it’s all about Palin! The latest comment is just more proof of her sheer stupidity…as evidenced by her improper usage of the phrase “blood
libel.” Evidently she was NOT aware of it’s meaning!
But then again why should we be surprised? Look who it’s coming from!

      • Karen

Again, it is YOUR opinion that Palin is inciting anyone. We all are responsible for our own actions. I am sorry that you feel that you are not and that you believe that you will be influenced so strongly by Palin’s opinion that you will not have your own. So sad.

      • No fan of Palin

I’m sorry and sad for you, Karen…that you are so blinded by Palin’s rhetoric…and even star-struck by her.
You have lost sight of an important issue: Violent words incite particularly in people who may have a propensity for violence by a mere suggestion or insinuation. Palin is irresponsible in her poor choice of words and the Rabbi’s call for her retraction is intelligent given the occured. Palin is not president, congress, or representative material. Palin should stay in cold, icy Alaska… And since you like her soooo much, you should join her!

      The definition from the dictionary:

Blood-libel. The accusation that Jews murder non-Jews to obtain blood for Passover rituals. This accusation was repeated in many places in the Middle Ages and was the cause of anti-Jewish riots and massacres. It was a regular motif in anti-Semitic propaganda until the Second World War.

So, I’d say he’s right. He isn’t saying she is or isn’t responsible. He’s saying she’s using the term out of context and incorrectly and he DOES have that right. You say she has the right to say anything she wants, so why doesn’t he? At least his statement is correct.

    • Greg

Karen, You’re a moron. You don’t have to believe anyone. LOOK IT UP YOURSELF. It means exactly what he said it does.

You sound as Stupid as Palin.

  • bdj

Everyone has a right to their opinions. But when you are in the public eye, especially if you have any intentions on running for public office, you had better understand the meaning of terms that you use in your speeches. If Sarah Palin want to have any chance of running for president, she had better “put brain in gear before engaging mouth”.

    • Karen

      Was it over your head?

  • Sink Sarah

Right. Sarah had nothing to do with the tragedy in Tucson.
Yet she says now the crosshairs were really surveyor’s marks…a complete insult to my intelligence. They were crosshairs…for a YEAR.
    And now they’re surveyor’s marks.
And in this insipid eight minute waste of noise, she spends more time sounding like a victim …than the 6 dead people or the 14 others with gaping bullet wounds in their bodies.
    Reload? Regurgitate.

    • Karen

If the Rabbi asked you to kill someone, would you? If ANYONE asked you to murder someone, would you?

I would not, but hey, that must be only me.

      • No fan of Palin

I seriously doubt, Karen, that Sarah Palin asked her supporters to shoot another human being. However, when you allude to violence by using trigger words or are no better than one who actually commits a crime. We have protected rights to freedom of speech…but not to incite! Palin is nothing but a poorly educated mouthpiece..she has neither substance nor class! Take that!!

      • Karen

You have to be kidding No Fan. Do you really believe that she alluded to violence? Oh puh-leez.

I think MANY AMERICANS are thinking too much and putting words in other people’s mouths.

I suggest you take EVERY WORD at face value and you will have lot less worries.

Respond to reality instead of the demons in your mind.

      • No fan of Palin

Since you have NO VALID argument, you have resorted to attacking me. You are not answering intelligently…
Get a clue! Palin’s use of cross-hairs to denote some election target can be misconstrued…these are trigger symbols! Reload?? How would you interpret that??WAKE UP!

    • S Smith

      Refudiate is so Elmer Fudd

  • David Perez

OMG, it’s clear that she’s stupid! Ignore her!

    • bdj

Is that comment for Sarah Palin or Karen????

      • krg

        I’d guess it’s for both.

  • Ahnol

Karen must be on her period today.Wow.

    • Karen

You are so brilliant. It amazes me beyond belief.

  • S Smith

Palin seems to be borderline sociopath
Always blaming others and the media

  • NilaP

    College drop out
Even only served half a term as Alaska Gov

  • Not newsworthy

Sarah Palin just another puppet of people working behind the scenes, THINK
