Suspect Killed, Sheriff's Deputy Shot In City Terrace

CITY TERRACE (AP) — A shootout in East Los Angeles has killed a paroled gang member and critically wounded a sheriff's deputy trainee, authorities said.

Deputy Mohammed Ahmed, 27, was shot in the face while patrolling with his training officer Tuesday night, Los Angeles County Sheriff Lee Baca said.

"I'm grateful that the wound does not appear to be life-threatening," he said in a statement.

Ahmed and the other deputy were patrolling the City Terrace area at about 7:15 p.m. Tuesday when they approached a car that was parked in a red zone.

"The suspect, who's a parolee, came out of the car, immediately started fighting with the trainee" and shot him, Baca told reporters at the scene.

Ahmed's training officer fought the attacker while the wounded deputy fell to the sidewalk, Baca said.

As they grappled, the parolee put the gun to the deputy's chest but he slapped it away as two shots went off, Baca said.

The shots missed the deputy, who shot the gunman once in the chest, Baca said.

The gunman died at the scene. His name was not immediately released.
