County CEO: Budget To Hurt LA Welfare-To-Work Families

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A top public official says he's worried Los Angeles County might not have enough funding to support Gov. Jerry Brown's proposal to shift a host of responsibilities from the state to counties.

County CEO Bill Fujioka said Tuesday that California's most populous county should embrace Brown's proposal to restructure state government to help resolve a $25.4 billion deficit.

However, he cautions that realignment would put a burden on the county.

Brown proposed transferring low-level offenders from state prisons to county jails. Fujioka says that means 13,550 felons could be added to the county's crowded jails.

He adds that Brown's proposal to cap benefits in the CalWORKS welfare-to-work program would hurt 37,000 families in the county.
