LA Ranks Among Least Literate US Cities

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — If you're reading this sentence, there's a good chance you may not be a local Angeleno.

KNX 1070's Pete Demetriou reports a study of America's most literate cities shows Los Angeles is in the bottom third, and a shift in how people get information may be the reasons behind that ranking.

An annual study by Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) ranks Washington DC at the number one slot, with San Francisco in the top ten at #6, and L.A. at a lowly #61.

Although technically reading is still done online, the study focused on a number of more traditional literacy markers, including bookstores (LA ranking: #53), education level: (#54), access to internet resources: (#33), library support / holdings: (#70), newspaper circulation (#51) and periodical publishers: (#58).

Other low-ranking Southland cities include Santa Ana (#67), Long Beach (#68) and Anaheim (#72).
