USDA Rule Change Follows SoCal Slaughterhouse Case

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S Department of Agriculture is telling slaughterhouse veterinary inspectors to ensure cows are euthanized when they are too sick or injured to stand.

The directive issued Wednesday is meant to keep potentially contaminated meat out of the food supply. It alters current rules that allow so-called downer cows with treatable conditions to receive veterinary care and then be slaughtered for meat.

Consumers Union food safety expert Michael Hansen says the rule change appears to be in reaction to the 2008 abuse allegations at a Southern California slaughterhouse that led to the largest beef recall in U.S. history.

Workers at Chino-based Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. were caught on videotape dragging sick and injured cows with chains and committing other abuses.

Paul McCartney said it very well: “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be a vegetarian.” Meat is rotting corpses, it is murder and it is disgusting. It is smelly and gross — how can any human eat it? Dairy is mucus-producing — the only milk designed for a species is the milk of that species, so if you want to drink milk, then drink human milk. Eggs are embryos — how appetizing is an embryo? Animal products are not only unappetizing, but they are horribly cruel. It’s not even just how animals are raised and kept, it’s about the killing, the horrendously cruel killing, and the killing itself. If you want to eat flesh, then eat human flesh — how’s that for appetizing? The prospect of eating a cow, pig, chicken, or any other animal makes about as much sense as serving your human relatives for dinner. You wouldn’t do that, so don’t demand that our non-human relatives be “food” — they are not food for humans. If you want to really see what is done to animals in the name of food, watch the powerful film “Earthlings” and ask others to watch it too — it’s what people need to open their eyes to what is done to the animals. Also watch “Meet your meat” and ask others to watch it too. Watch them if you dare, you can find them free on the internet. Vegan is the only sensible choice. “We must not refuse to see with our eyes what they endure with their bodies.”

You are sooooo right. Vegetarianism is my choice for 2011.

There you go making stupid and ignorant comments again. First it’s about cutting down trees and now this.

You really need to think before you speak (type). I don’t plan on telling you how to live and what to eat and you in turn should respect the decisions of others.

Wow, Corrine, you’re a horrible person. I can see how this cynicism and bitterness consumes you altogether. Meat is murder. Yes. But so it the act of existence. Evey day you live and breathe on this planet, the earth is dying.

This is why you should buy from a local farmer you can trust. Visit the farm and the processing facilities to ensure that you are supporting a farmer who cares about the welfare of their animals. We are all going to be someone’s dinner someday, even if just feeding the microbes in the soil after we die, (unless you insist on the environmentally toxic embalming chemicals used to preserve corpses). We treat our animals very well, with plenty of grass, hay and silage for feed, uncrowded conditions and when they are slaughtered, they are dead immediately (which is the way I hope I die.).

People! this is not about the food you eat! it’s about the abuse that goes on in these Slaughter Houses that I cant even go into detail with you!!! Things you couldn’t even imagine or believe they go on! if you don’t care then you should turn yourself in as hard core killers because you are sick. Work inside one of these places…I guarantee you wont last a day…if you do…then something is very wrong with you!
