LOS ANGELES (AP) — Despite the weeklong rains deluging California, forecasters say the Golden State should experience a drier than average winter.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration says the current La Nina climate phenomenon in the tropical Pacific favors drier winter conditions for California and the Southwest.

Government scientists say just because recent rainfall pounded California doesn’t mean January through March will be similarly rainy.

There are other factors besides La Nina that affects local weather. The latest storm system was caused by cold polar air clashing with warm, moist air. ‘
