California Jobless Rate Unchanged At 12.4 Percent

SACRAMENTO (AP) — California's unemployment rate is holding steady for a fourth month at 12.4 percent.

The state Employment Development Department on Friday reported a net gain of 1,600 non-farm jobs during November. This followed a revised gain of 43,200 jobs in October.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger says he's encouraged by gains in construction jobs for two consecutive months — the first time since 2006. Still, he says, far too many Californians remain out of work.

The state reports that 2,267,000 Californians were unemployed in November. That's up by 11,000 from the same month last year.

And while fewer people received unemployment benefits last month compared to October, the number of new claims edged up.
