Great Dane That Grabbed Baby In Monrovia To Be Put Down

MONROVIA (AP) — A Great Dane that grabbed a baby from its mother’s arms in Monrovia will be destroyed.

The San Gabriel Valley Tribune says the owners have decided to euthanize the dog, a 170-pound neutered male called Zack.

KNX 1070’s Bill Cooper reports

The 6-month-old girl is recovering at a hospital. She suffered a punctured lung, a punctured liver and two broken ribs in Monday’s attack.

Police say the mother had the baby on her shoulder and was talking with a neighbor on the neighbor’s porch when the dog rushed out of the house and grabbed the child.

The adults chased the dog about 100 yards before it dropped the child and ran home.

The dog was impounded. Police said it had no history of aggressive behavior.

I’m going out on a limb here. But i’ll give 5 to 1 odds that the dog has baby doll toys that its owners let it play with. The dog is guilty of a poor choice in owners!

  • A concerned pet owner

Don’t put that dog down!!!!! Give him to some family with NO children or other small animals. He didn[t do it to be cruel, he thought it was a toy!!!!! I feel for the baby and the families involved.

  • Chris

You can;t put the dog down for parents mistakes. The dog tried to save the baby thinking the mother was going to drop it while it was on/over her shoulder. The dog has not other behavior problems. Give the dog for adoption, do not kill it.

  • diana

This is a real tragedy. I am sure the dog had no “intent” of hurting the baby. I only wish the dog did not have to be put down, as the police said the dog had no previous history of aggressive behavior. Such a tragedy!

    • CecilK

Even the gentleman in the las Vegas show that got wounded by one of his tigers, of whom he had raised since they were cubs, pleaded for them not to be hurt as he was carried away. I so agree “don’t harm the dog! “

  • Kim

feel horrible for the family, but I don’t think the dog should be put down. I have dogs myself and perhaps the dog thought the baby was a toy. It’s the owner’s responsibility to have made sure that the dog was securely at home. If the dog didn’t have any prior violent history, I think he really thought the baby was a toy. He should be given a chance to live.

  • Bob

Large dogs and Pitbulls have no place in society. They should be put down.

    • Laura

You’re an idiot. You should be put down.

      • Lia

        I agree with Laura!

    • Astonished

By your analogy short fat people and tall lanky people have no place in society either. Would you put them down also. Anything that breaths and defecates can bite, regardless of the size.

  • Astonished

If the family decides on this, there is nothing else that can be done. Too bad because this is a noble breed that is definetely not known for agression, and they are very child friendly. Maybe the family will instead be talked into giving him up for rehabilitation and adoption. There are a lot of good owners out there who would love to have him.

  • Adam

That murdeous great dane needs to be put down. It has tasted blood now, so it will only get more blood thirsty from here on out. It is sad that it has to be put down, especially since great danes are usually docile, but this one is murderous, and now with blood in its mouth, its murder spree needs to stopped before it starts

    • Astonished

Please quite being so dramatic! The dog didn’t “murder” anything. It dropped the child when it realized it’s mistake. Trust me, if it had meant to kill that child, she would be dead! As for tasting blood, does that go for anyone who has tasted rare meat also?

  • Jackie

Whether or not I agree with this decision, why use the word ‘destroyed’?? What a callous, tacky use of the word to describe what should be referred to as ‘euthanizing the dog’ or ‘putting the dog down’. But I’m sure the dog could just be rehabbed and re-homed.

    • krg

Because “destroyed” is actually what is being done. Dressing it up in softer words doesn’t change what it is and also softens the reality. The decision to kill your dog isn’t an easy one and shouldn’t be made easy by using a nice name.

I don’t know why the dog did what it did but I’m very sorry to hear that is the decision the family made instead of opting to re-home it.

Of course if this was a pit bull every person on here would be supporting the decision.

  • din

Any dog that growls and barks constantly and deprives us of sleep should be put down..

    • Big Phil

Your mom keeps me up all night with her snoring. I think she should be put down too.

  • Loon

I agree with Jackie. How about “sent to big farm where it could run and play”? That would be a nicer way to put it.

  • K2Frost

Why is it our society struggles with the death penalty for humans but does not think twice about putting a helpless animal down when it behaves like…an animal. This is the owner’s fault, NOT the dog’s. I hope someone, or at least a Dane Rescue will step up to help save this dog before it is too late. Shame on the owners for not seeking alternatives.

  • Alex

I totally agree with K2Frost i wish a rescue would step in an help this gentle giant, i have a 2 year old dane an they are by far the best dog…..

  • itzel

a person that would even consider putting down an animal should even be allowed to own one.
take your responsibility as a pet owner and DO NOT put down such a beautiful dog!
    such a shame.

  • itzel

    i meant shouldnt.

  • Tony

He should be sent to Gentle Giants Rescue in Norco, Ca. he can be rehabbed and adopted by a family that knows how to handle big Danes.

  • Chris

Strange! a dog can attack a baby and get put to death….I man with years of criminal details ranging from rape to murder to child molestation, gets a few years in jail with 3 meals a day….work out time in the gym in which “I” the tax payer pays for and can be set free if the jail is too crowded LOL! it sucks to be a Dog and it sucks to be living in this criminal justice society! easier to kill a dog then a criminal career man eh?
