Investigation Into Sheriff’s Deputies’ Christmas Brawl

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Internal and criminal investigations have been started into a brawl at a Christmas party that involved seven Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies.

The fight broke out around 11:30 p.m. Friday outside Quiet Cannon in Montebello, according to sheriff’s spokesman Steve Whitmore.

Whitmore says the party was being held for deputies who work at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles and only deputies were involved in the brawl.

He says two deputies were treated at the scene for mild or moderate injuries.

A source told CBS2/KCAL9’s Serene Branson that all the deputies were drunk and the altercation began when one of them began “talking trash, asking why it takes so long to escort inmates into the visitor’s area.”

The source also said some of the deputies involved sport tattoos that identify them as being from different parts of the jail.

“All of that will be contained in this investigation, and that very well may be true,” Whitmore said. “Is there a culture that’s endemic to this? Perhaps there is. Is it going to stop? Yes. It’s going to stop.”

Montebello Police say officers responded to a 911 call at the restaurant. In a statement, the department said a man who identified himself as a sheriff’s department captain told the officers at the door that everything was fine and that they would handle it.

Two deputies went to Montebello Police Department to file a report, but the sheriff’s department will handle those reports.

Whitmore says seven deputies have been relieved of duty while the department investigates.

    1. Astonished says:

How do you know these aren’t so-called “Christian Deputies?” I know plenty of “Christians” who can tie one on at parties and who wouldn’t pass a drug test.

  2. Juan says:

F en crooket cops! I was in jail and they act as if they were gang bangers in there. They treat the inmates like if they were the captains and the inmates were the soldiers but with less respect. F the police

    1. RC says:

Hey Juan, wise up! It’s JAIL! How do you expect to be treated? Like as if you were staying at the Hilton?

  3. CHP IS #1 says:

“The source also said some of the deputies involved sport tattoos that identify them as being from different parts of the jail.”

  5. Diane Craig says:

Why is no one calling the Feds regarding a corruption investigation? If I was at a party with my coworkers and had a “drunken brawl,” there would have been arrests. How does the LASD get to direct an investigation that occurred in Montebello’s jurisdiction. Why do they get to walk the streets with full pay no less? No pay for anyone until conclusion of investigation. At conclusion, the individuals found to be innocent should receive back pay, but the guilty should not get a dime.

    1. Embarrassed says:

The Criminal Investigative Unit looks into if there should be arrests arrests made while Internal Affairs looks at policy violations. The department can’t press charges for misdemeanor crimes without a victim pressing charges. This would be the same if the fight was with your coworkers. Anyone arrested that night would have been for drunk but the battery charges would have been brought from person to person. The reality is in any fight charges usually are not pressed because the “suspect” can press them back on the “victim”.

As for the pay. The deputies fall under the Police Officer Bill of Rights or pobar. Pobar is state law and says exactly how the department can handle an investigation in regards of paying the deputy all the way to questioning them and how long the department has to complete the investigation.

If I was these dputies I would be more concerned over the policy violations than any criminal complaints. They just flushed a career over whose jail floor is better. Guys have been fired for less.

  6. Chevy says:

Hhhmm. “some of the deputies involved sport tattoos that identify them as being from different parts of the jail.” …. sounds strangely similar to the gang tattoos that identify them as being from different parts of the city or neighborhood. What an education the public might get if one were to peel the lid back off the department and take a really, good, long, thorough look inside!!!

Assistant Sheriff Paul Tanaka sports a VIKIBGS tatoo from his time working in Lynwood. The Gang Thugs have risen to the top of the Sheriff’s Department – Thanks to Lee Baca.

  7. Mr. Sheriff 13 says:

“F” all sheriff’s!!! especially the ones located on 3rd street in East Los Angeles. Bunch of ghetto fools with badges.

  8. Decent American says:

I used to work in a Mexican restaurant in Montebello. The worst part of the job was dealing with the rude drunk off duty sheriff deputies from the jail. Young drunk PUNKS! The owner was afraid of them and never stopped it. I finally had enough and quit. Lee Baca has lost control of his department and doesn’t seem to care.

  9. Joe says:

so true most of my buddies that r cops now would get punked around in HS along with being little guys

  10. lawsdontapply says:

If it was 11:30 PM and they were drunk how were they going to get home?
Drive a police car so they would not get a dui!!!

  12. GET REAL says:

Are Sheriff Deputies not allowed to have a “brawl” they are just as human as anyone of us civilians. Just because they are deputies does not make them upstanding citizens who are not allowed to make mistakes. Everyone needs to take a breather and stop JUDGING! Truth is you will all still pick up that phone & need assistance from LASD. This is just an opportunity for all you “cop hating” “ticket receiving” people to take advantage of.

    1. Thevoiceofreason says:

I couldn’d have said it better myself…. God bless LASD!!!

    2. Lee Baca (not) says:

lol… they lasd should try that sometime… presumption of innocence I think it’s called… LOL

    3. Osama Bin Laden says:

then let them be treated like humans and go to jail also and have a felony in their record so it can be hard for them to get a job.

    4. batteredbypd says:

No they are not! Not on company time while armed & drunk! Being they arrest & mess up regular peoples lives over doing the same exact thing..No they shouldn’t get a pass! We aren’t judging yet stating facts.. We don’t like our tax dollars going to a bunch of out of control, over authoritative bullies….I can think of better uses of my tax dollars!

This is just an opportunity for all you ‘cop lovers’ to start making up excuses for one of the many mistakes theses sheriffs make!

  13. lawsdontapply says:

Was it taxpayer money that was used to rent the hall & buy the booze?
Last I heard LA county is broke.

    1. Embarrassed says:

Let me start off by saying I am a deputy not assigned to cj. This brawl is very embarrassing and has tarnished my badge. Please keep in mind that these kids that work in the jails are new deputies with no job experience and very little life experience.

No. They have fund raises and have to buy tickets to go to the events.

Someone said that the Feds should be called. The Feds wont have anything to do with it because it was off duty. Also it was all misdemeanor batteries so charges have to be filed by the deputies involved in the brawl against each other. These idiots are going to most likely lose their jobs over that brawl.

The tattoos, well they are stupid kids trying to be cool. I am willing to bet that there will be some new policies regarding tattoos. They are getting them to show pride of their assignments not to identify themselves on the street as a member of a cretin group. People get tattoos in all sorts of industries to show pride of their jobs.

  16. commonsense says:

There does not need to be an investigation..These are grown men supposedly trained to handle high stress life and death situations. They are beating each other at a christmas party really who decided these fools should carry guns!?

    1. batteredbypd says:

      Very well put!
