LAPD Captain Teams Up With Son For Final Patrol

SYLMAR (CBS) — LAPD Capt. Steve Zipperman Wednesday spent his last shift with the department in an emotional way – on patrol with his son, Chad.

The elder Zipperman is the commanding officer of the LAPD's Southwest Area Community Police Station. He is also a former SWAT lieutenant and former member of the elite Metro Division. His son, Officer Chad Zipperman, is assigned to the Mission Station in the east San Fernando Valley.

"I don't think I could have asked for a script to be written any better," the elder Zipperman said upon reporting for the Mission Station's 2 p.m. roll call with his son.

"I talk about, you know, a father and a son and that relationship. But tonight it's not a father-son relationship," he said. "We're brothers tonight. We're brother officers."

His next assignment will be as chief of the Los Angeles Unified School District Police.
