2 Killed By Amtrak Train In Commerce Were Teens

COMMERCE (CBS) — Los Angeles County authorities said Tuesday night that two teenage boys were among the three people killed by an Amtrak train in Commerce.

Investigators say a freight train was traveling through the area and the youth were walking on tracks next to that train Monday night.

Sheriff's Sgt. Michael Thomas says there was a lot of noise and the teen probably never heard the passenger train coming.

While police investigated, 125 passengers on the train were stranded for more than five hours.

The dead were identified as Anthony Sandoval, 15, and Gilbert Correa, 17. The third victim's age was not immediately available. He was identified as Josephn Hernandez.

The conductor saw the three on the tracks "and he applied the brakes," said Deputy Jeff Gordon of the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau. "He couldn't stop and he saw two people get hit. The third was considered missing. Later they did find the third person."

It is not clear what the three were doing on the tracks.

No passengers or crew on the train were injured.
