2 Compost Piles Burn At Recycling Center In Chino
CHINO (AP) — Two 25-foot stacks of green waste are burning on five acres at a recycling center in Chino.
Chino Valley Fire Department spokeswoman Massiel Ladron de Guevara says crews will use heavy machinery Monday to break up the burning piles of grass, weeds, palm fronds and other waste. She says the material is so densely packed that water won't penetrate it the way it is.
The smoky fire was first reported about 6 p.m. Sunday at the old Van Der Dyke dairy, which has been converted to a recycling center. Firefighters moved other stacks away from the burning piles.
Ladron de Guevara says the cause is under investigation. She says crews will be working the blaze all day and into the night.
There have been no injuries and no homes are threatened.
