LAUSD Considers Allowing Corporate Sponsors

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The cash-strapped Los Angeles Unified School District is considering raising funds by turning to corporate sponsors -- but parents shouldn't expect ads from tobacco or alcohol companies.

School board members will meet Tuesday to consider overturning the district's ban on corporate advertising on campuses.

The Daily Breeze reported Sunday the plan could raise $18 million a year. The money would go directly to athletic programs and extracurricular activities that are likely to be victims of budget cuts.

Under the new rules, selected companies would be able to place logos on everything from sports fields to cafeterias.

District officials say only acceptable partnerships would be allowed. Companies selling fast food or high-sugar sodas would be rejected.
