Calif. Report: Nearly 60 Percent Voted Nov. 2

SACRAMENTO (AP) — Secretary of State Debra Bowen says 59.6 percent of California's eligible voters cast ballots on Nov. 2, the highest for a gubernatorial election in the state since 1994.

Bowen certified the statewide results on Friday, which makes the results official.

Bowen's office says in the governor's race, Democrat Jerry Brown beat Republican Meg Whitman 53.8 percent to 40.9 percent.

In the closely fought attorney general contest, Democrat Kamala Harris beat Republican Steve Cooley, 46.1 percent to 45.3 percent.

In the race for U.S. Senate, incumbent Democratic Sen. Barbara Boxer beat challenger Carly Fiorina 52.2 percent to 42.2 percent.

Bowen says 48.4 percent of the votes cast were by mail.
