How Much Should You Give? Holiday Tipping In Hard Times

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — All year-round, there are people in our daily lives who provide a courtesy or service for us that goes beyond monetary value. And while 'tis the season to give, many Americans are struggling simply to make ends meet.

So where can we find the funds for tipping? Leslie Ware of Consumer Reports gives some pointers to KFWB's Maggie McKay.

Podcast

First and foremost, make sure to prioritize your giving: typically house cleaners receive the biggest gratuities -- about an average of $50 -- followed by child care providers and other family helpers.

Also, it's not always necessary or convenient to give cash; gift cards or even small items are a great way to express your gratitude without offending anybody. Mail carriers and teachers, for example, aren't usually allowed to accept gifts, so be aware of any policies or cultural norms where giving may be frowned upon.

And remember, if your budget is tight this Christmas, it's never out of season to simply say "thank you" with a heartfelt card or note.
