Couple Arrested In Beating Of School Crossing Guard

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man and woman are accused of beating a school crossing guard and stealing her stop sign and whistle while astonished kids looked on.

KNX 1070’s Pete Demetriou Reports

Investigators say 59-year-old Shirley Mayberry was helping about 20 children cross the street in the unincorporated Florence area when she tried to stop a sport utility vehicle turning into the intersection Monday afternoon.

Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Parker says Mayberry told the driver of a black Ford Expedition that he must stop. The couple allegedly got out of the SUV and beat her before fleeing with her stop sign and whistle.

Deputies arrested 27-year-old Jose Hernandez and 20-year-old Vanessa Del Pilar Martinez.

Mayberry had bumps and bruises, but she refused medical treatment at the scene.

Maximum penalty please. In fact, in this case I hope the police fabricate a weapons charge and it triples their sentence.

  2. g says:

What the hell is wrong with some people?!?!?! when they are caught, they should get the maximum of any sentence imposed on them!

    1. g says:

forgive me when they are TRIED in court.

  3. katri says:

This couple should receive maximum sentence. The crossing guard protects the children and is assaulted for it? No compromise here!

  4. rjsmitty says:

There doing the jobs that Americans wont do.

    1. Joshua Scuteri says:

I’m pretty sure the crossing guard was American.

  5. Joe says:

These two should receive the maximum sentence,. Also forced to do hard labor.
Maybe a good flogging would be in order.

    1. Joshua Scuteri says:

Yeah, cuz if we’ve learned nothing else it’s that the prison system teaches people to be more compassionate.

  6. katie says:

talk about this dumb/**** being under the influence of meth or coke

  7. Mark says:

I do not know who this crossing guard is employed by, but when I was in elementary school, our crossing guard was employed by the police department. This couple should be tried as if they had assaulted a police officer.

    1. Mini Mousekat says:

Unfortunately (and I may be wrong), I believe crossing guards are volunteers by the school district.

Morons!!! Stupid – stupid people! Have no damn sense!

  9. jip says:

Oh yeah, this is how it is these days and it will get worse unless the bleeding hearts understand that victims have rights too. Typical Ford owner.

  10. Señor Loco says:

What is our society turning into? Did these two animals…actually, that’s in insult to animals…these two freaks think they could really commit this act and get away with it in front of 20+ witnesses? Both of them must have been tweaked. Throw the book at ’em!

  11. joe says:

Looks like a real tough guy to beat up an older lady.

  12. Mary says:

How sad – what is going on in our world. It is getting crazier and crazier – and the acts of violence are getting worse and worse. Poor lady – Thought I know she has suffered emotionally, I am glad she is okay physically.

  13. BobN says:

Their sentence should be that they have to be crossing guards for the next ten years

  14. Rick says:

American laws are so weak and that is why we have these kind of crazy people in this country. There shouldn’t be such thing as “human rights” for these kind of criminals

  15. Mini Mousekat says:

Aside from a hefty fine and a lengthly prison sentence and a felony on their records, they need to be sentenced to standing on a busy street corner wearing a large sign for 8 hours a day stating their crime. I know that there are cities in other states that criminals are sentenced to this punishment.

    1. Mel Gibson says:

Jeeesse Mini. I guess you know how to punish. I’m sure they would just stand there all day with a sign on their back. Duuhhh! No wonder our laws are not paid attention to.

  16. Hope he gets a “special” pat down from Bubba.

  17. Chris says:

Hey people make mistakes so they should be set free….let these two go….maybe they learned a lesson LOL

  18. Pablito says:

    Mmmmmm…..meth heads

Monsters. Throw the book at these low lifes. What an unconscionable thing to do. What kind of person does this? Seriously? Who sees a crossing guard doing her job – protecting children – and immediately thinks the best way to respond to a what, maybe 30-second delay? is by beating her?

  19. rene says:

They should do community work, for at least 1billion hours.

  20. Vanamos says:

All cars should stop for crossing guards, pedestrians and children
The crossing guard ha no right to hit the car with the sign
No right to assault and batter

  21. Saber 1 says:

Waterboarding really works. Keep them awake with Heavy Metal vomit music, air conditioner on 50, water board everyhour on the hour. Pull finger nails with pliars. Then execute.
