Records Broken For Cold Temperatures At LAX, Palmdale

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Don't forget to pick up some coats, mittens and scarves during your Black Friday shopping – winter has arrived with a vengeance, with temperatures dipping into the 20s in some Southern California communities.

Just before 3 a.m., the National Weather Service says they recorded 21 degrees in Lancaster and 23 degrees in Palmdale.

It wasn't much better further west – it was 47 degrees in downtown Los Angeles just before 3 a.m., 38 in Burbank and 44 degrees in Long Beach. Further east and higher in the San Gabriel Mountains, it was a teeth-chattering 19 degrees in Wrightwood.

"A very cold and dry air mass will continue to generate near or below freezing temperatures across many inland portions of Southern and Central California," according to a Weather Service statement.

"These cold temperatures will likely create areas of frost in wind-sheltered locations, as well as hard freeze conditions across the Antelope Valley," where a freeze warning is in effect until 9 a.m.

The Weather Service warned that precautions should be taken to protect sensitive outdoor plants and crops, as well as vulnerable animals and pets, which should be kept indoors in a barn or house.

A freeze warning means sub-freezing temperatures are likely to occur for more than two hours.

In the San Fernando and San Gabriel valleys and Santa Monica Mountains Recreational Area, a frost advisory is in effect from until 9 a.m., and temperatures could drop to 28 to 32 degrees, with areas of frost in wind-sheltered areas. A frost advisory means that frost is possible.

On Thanksgiving, the low in Palmdale was 21 degrees, breaking the record of 23 degrees set in 1946, while at Los Angeles International Airport, the temperature dropped to 42 degrees, tying the record set in 1946.
