OC Police Chief, Captain Placed On Administrative Leave

COSTA MESA (AP) — Costa Mesa's police chief and police captain have been placed on administrative leave, but no reason was given for the change in command.

City Manager Allan Roeder announced via email Thursday that Chief Chris Shawkey and Capt. Ron Smith had been removed from day-to-day operations at the Orange County police force.

City News Service reports that Capt. Les Gogerty, who has been with the department since 1985, will serve as interim commander.

Shawkey joined the department in 2007 after being recruited from the Phoenix Police Department. Smith has been with the department for about 30 years.

Neither Roeder, Shawkey or Smith could be reached for comment.
