LONG BEACH (AP) — The city of Long Beach could take a financial hit because of a Carnival cruise ship fire that will keep the vessel out of service until mid-January.

The cruise line says nine voyages for 30,000 travelers have been canceled while the Splendor is repaired. The ship was towed to San Diego last week after spending days without power off the Mexican coast.

The Splendor and another Carnival ship normally depart from Long Beach, which benefits local hotels, tourist spots and ship suppliers. One study says Carnival spends about $45 million a year locally on everything from food to fuel.

Nancy Sidhu, chief economist of the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corp., tells the Long Beach Press-Telegram that business could be disrupted for several months.
