MTA Considers Toll Lanes For 405 Freeway

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — Would you pay extra to use the carpool lanes during rush hour traffic on the 405 Freeway?

MTA and Caltrans thinks a lot of Angelenos will open up their wallets in exchange for a faster commute and are moving forward with a plan to convert carpool lanes into toll lanes on several Southern California freeways.

High occupancy toll lanes have already been approved for parts of the 10 and 110 freeways.

Now the MTA says they're looking at congestion pricing for the 405 freeway between San Fernando and Hawthorne along with portions of the 605, 91 and 57 freeways.

The move from carpool lanes to toll roads is Los Angeles County's first venture into congestion-based pricing. Tolls may be set higher or lower in direct relation to the traffic volumes.

An MTA committee will be discussing possible expansion in a meeting Wednesday.
