WASHINGTON (AP) — With some new governors rejecting funds for high-speed rail, California’s two U.S. senators are telling the Obama administration that the federal government should redirect that money to their state.

Sens. Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer say money not used for rail in states such as Wisconsin and Ohio should go to a state with a strong financial commitment to high-speed rail.

They told Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood on Tuesday that no state was more determined than California.

California voters have committed more than $9 billion in bonds to high-speed rail. The federal government has already set aside $3 billion as well for the California project.

The rail system would eventually extend some 800 miles, linking Sacramento and the Bay Area to San Diego.
