UC Schools Recruit Out-Of-State Students To Help Budget

OAKLAND (AP) — The financially strapped University of California is actively recruiting more out-of-state and international students to bolster budgets.

Non-California UC students each bring in $23,000 a year while resident fees next year are expected to be $11,124. UC regents vote this week on a proposal to raise undergraduate fees 8 percent.

The Los Angeles Times says most of the nine UC campuses have been increasingly sending admissions officials to high schools, college admissions fairs and other events outside the state in response to the California budget crisis.

UCLA admissions officers, for instance, have visited Chicago, Boston, Atlanta and Honolulu as well as China, Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Singapore in search of students.
