Woman Faces Misdemeanor Charges In Notre Dame Runner's Death

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — An 18-year-old Van Nuys woman faces misdemeanor charges for a crash that killed a Notre Dame High School student.

A young woman arrested in the accident that killed a Notre Dame High School cross-country runner Oct. 19 is facing misdemeanor charges of hit-and-run and driving without a license. County prosecutors indicated there was no evidence for a felony filing for Moran Biton of Van Nuys, because she contacted police and did not hide any details of the case.

If convicted, Biton could be sentenced to 18 months behind bars.

The charges were filed as misdemeanors, rather than felonies, after the District Attorney's Office declined to file charges and handed the case down to the City Attorney's Office, which only handles the lesser charges.

Conor Lynch, a 16-year-old junior, and three teammates were running to practice after school when a Hyundai sport utility vehicle driven by Biton hit him as he jogged across Woodman Avenue in Sherman Oaks in the middle of the block.

He died at the scene. Police said Biton drove away from the crash, continued heading north on Woodman and pulled over when she saw several officers working on another matter.
