Mom Defends Boy’s ‘Daphne’ Halloween Costume

LOS ANGELES (CBS) — A controversy on the Internet has turned into a national debate after a little boy dressed up as “Daphne” from the cartoon “Scooby Doo” for a Halloween party at school.

The 5-year old’s outfit drew criticism from parents and has sparked strong opinions on what’s appropriate for young kids to wear, even as a Halloween costume.

When the boy’s mom wrote a blog post about the incident at school and posted a picture of the pre-schooler, she received millions of page hits and tens of thousands of comments — most of them critical of her allowing the boy to wear the costume.

KFWB’s  Maggie McKay asks family therapist Susan Stone if she thinks the woman’s critics are making too much of a fuss.

Oh so what! It’s Halloween, for pete’s sake! That’s the point of the day, isn’t it? To dress up and be something you’re not? Allowing her son to wear that costume did not hurt him or hurt anyone else, so anyone who is appalled by it should just get over it! Even if the boy wore girls dresses around his house everyday, it’s NONE OF OUR BUSINESS! It was a Halloween costume, folks!

I have a niece who dressed as Batman last year and the whole family supported this. This year for her birthday she asked for a dinosaur not a doll. And guess what she recieved her dinosaur. People are making a big deal out of nothing. I for one am glad that the mother let her son dress in the costume of his choice. Who are we to judge.

I think that people that have a problem with this should just keep there comments to themselves. My niece dressed as SPIDERMAN one year. and When were little i remember my brother dressing up has a girl. At the age of 5 little kids are still finding out who they are. i do not understand the big concern about this. Parents that make a big deal are the ones that there kids turn into to be bully’s because they learn from their parents.
