Storied Courthouse To Get $244M Facelift
LOS ANGELES (AP) — The downtown Los Angeles courthouse where Charles Manson and Sirhan Sirhan were tried is getting a $244-million makeover after standing vacant for years.
Los Angeles County supervisors on Wednesday approved renovations for the county Hall of Justice. The massive Beaux-Arts structure will be converted into a new sheriff's headquarters and law-enforcement office building.
The 14-story granite building was vacated after it was badly damaged by the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
County spokeswoman Judy Hammond says officials hope to complete the renovations by June 2012.
They'll be financed through a bond issue partially subsidized by federal stimulus funding.
