LOS ANGELES (AP) — The San Diego Zoo is loaning two Asian elephants to the Los Angeles Zoo for the December opening of a $42 million pachyderm exhibit at the Griffith Park animal sanctuary.

Former circus performers Jewel and Tina have been at the San Diego Zoo for 14 months.

San Diego Zoo elephant curator Jeff Andrews says Jewel and Tina, believed to be in their mid-40s, have been nursed back to good health and are ready for a new home. The loan is open-ended, with no certain date for the elephants to return to San Diego.

The Elephants of Asia exhibit opens at the Los Angeles Zoo in mid-December.

Agreed Julie. The LA news article says Jewel has abscessed feet. The LA Zoo let Gita suffer until the day she died with infected feet. Jewel should be retired to a sanctuary NOW!
